D24x40 S3 HDD

The D24x40 S3 Navigator® horizontal directional drill carries on a proud legacy of reliability.

Description

The D24x40 set the industry standard in 1993, and today there are even more reasons it’s the trusted choice to meet contractors’ right-size, right-power needs.

With 28,000 lb (124.6 kN) of thrust and pullback and 4200 ft-lb (5694.4 Nm) of rotational torque — an increase over its predecessor (D24x40 Series II Navigator® horizontal directional drill) — the D24x40 S3 directional drill helps maximize machine and jobsite productivity, while class-leading cycle times help get the job done faster.

Feature Benefit
125 hp (93 kW) John Deere Tier 3 or Tier 4 Final engine
The D24x40 S3 is available in either Tier 4 Final or Tier 3 engine options. Offers power for drilling as well as tracking and maneuvering the drill around the jobsite for maximum productivity.
28,000 lb (124.6 kN) of thrust/pullback and 4200 ft-lb (5694.4 Nm) of rotational torque
The D24x40 S3 features 28,000 lb (124.6 kN) of thrust/pullback and 4200 ft-lb (5694.4 Nm) of rotational torque. The D24x40 S3 offers an increase in thrust/pullback thrust and rotational torque over its predecessor, the D24x40 Series II, which helps maximize machine and jobsite productivity.
AutoDrill
AutoDrill allows the operator to set the rotation and thrust/pullback pressure while drilling in changing soil conditions. The patent-pending AutoResume function allows slurry/cuttings to mix before the thrust/pullback resumes. This feature offers increased flexibility of the drill during operation.
Class-leading carriage speed
The D24x40 S3 features a class-leading carriage speed of 240 ft/min (73.1 m/min), which is 20 percent faster than its top competitor. Increased carriage speeds can lead to decreased cycle times, helping contractors install more linear feet per day.
Common control system
The D24x40 S3 shares the common control system currently used on the S3 Navigator® drill lineup. The system features a digital display in addition to the DigiTrak® Aurora™ and improved onboard diagnostics. The system design uses a power distribution module that reduces the amount of wiring and fuses for greater reliability. All S3 Navigator drills have a common control platform, benefitting drill operators with the ability to operate a variety of drills and lessening the time needed for training.
Enhanced hydraulic system design
The D24x40 S3 features an enhanced hydraulic system design with improved rotation, thrust and tracking performance over its predecessor, the D24x40 Series II. The D24x40 S3 incorporates hydraulic system improvements time-tested on larger Vermeer drills, including the D80x100 Series II, D100x120 Series II and D100x140 S3 Navigator® Horizontal Directional Drills (HDDs). The enhanced hydraulic system helps increase the machine’s efficiency and productivity by better use of engine horsepower.
Excavator-style cab with increased legroom
An excavator-style cab enhances operator comfort. Operators can drill in greater comfort, while feeling less cramped.
Operator’s station with DigiTrak® Aurora™ screen
The D24x40 S3 features a streamlined operator’s station with the touchscreen DigiTrak® Aurora™ screen for a more immersive drilling experience. The DigiTrak® Aurora™ full-color touchscreen display delivers real-time, easy-to-view locate information which can help make a driller’s day more productive.
Rotational speed
Rotational speed is similar to larger drills. The D24x40 S3 features a 270 rpm rotational speed, outpacing its top competitor by 18%. Increased rotational speeds can help contractors install product faster and maximize efficiency on the jobsite.
Sound reduction
With a 104 dB(A) guaranteed sound power level, and an operator ear rating of 82.9 dB(A), the D24x40 S3 is one of the quieter drills in the HDD marketplace and is significantly quieter than its predecessor, the D24x40 Series II. The in-cab operator ear rating is 75.7 dB(A). Significant gains in sound reduction make the D24x40 S3 particularly suited to working in congested commercial and residential areas as the quieter working environment contributes to less neighborhood disturbance. Operator comfort is also increased, making long hours spent on the drill less fatiguing. Communication between operator and locator is easier.
Tracking power and speed enhancements
The drill can track up to 3.3 mph (5.3 km/h), which is more than 27 percent faster than select competitor models. An increase in tracking speed coupled with an increase in tractive effort allows the drill to better make sharp turns and climb slopes as compared to its competitors, and offers the opportunity for improved jobsite productivity as you can get the drill into place faster.
